Adaptable math teacher title cover letter example

Dear Dr. Taylor,

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Math Teacher position at East High School, as advertised on the Denver Public Schools website. With my Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of Colorado Boulder and five years of teaching experience at Fairview High School in Boulder, I am confident in my ability to contribute to your school's commitment to academic excellence.

During my time at Fairview High School, I developed and implemented innovative teaching strategies that increased student engagement and improved standardized test scores in mathematics by 15% over three years. I also served as the coach for the school's Math Olympiad team, leading them to a second-place finish in the state competition last year.

I am particularly drawn to East High School's reputation for fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment. Your school's emphasis on STEM education aligns perfectly with my passion for making mathematics accessible and exciting for students of all backgrounds.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my experience and teaching philosophy can contribute to East High School's mathematics program. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Charles Wilson

Sections of a math teacher cover letter

Writing a cover letter for math teacher jobs isn’t as black-and-white as a math equation, but there are rules to follow for maximum success. Each part of your letter plays a role in proving you're the best candidate for the job:

  1. Cover letter header. Lay out the important details like your name, email address, and phone number.
  2. Greeting. Start off on the right foot by making a personal connection. If you can address the recruiter or hiring manager by name, do so.
  3. Introduction. Grab the reader’s attention by introducing yourself and sharing your excitement about the role.
  4. Body. Delve into your experience, accomplishments, and skills.
  5. Conclusion. Reiterate your interest in the job and share a summary of your qualifications. Include a call to action to compel the reader to respond.
  6. Signature. Sign off with a professional goodbye, including your name.

Just like the parts of a mathematical formula, each section of your cover letter is a crucial part of your overall narrative.

While a resume’s length may vary, a cover letter should be a single page. Don’t waste space simply reiterating your resume; instead, weave your skills into a story while conveying your passion.

Once you’ve added your header and addressed the reader, you’re ready to get started with your introduction.

Introduction of a math teacher cover letter

You’ve probably learned how to make math interesting to reluctant students, so leverage those skills to kick your letter off with a bang.

Pull out the most interesting and engaging anecdotes from your teaching career to share here. Have you achieved major increases in math scores? Transformed math-hating students into mathletes? Do you have impressive credentials?

Do

Don't

Hi, I’m Charles. I’m very interested in your open opportunity and think it would be a great use of my skills and experience.

Don’t just share boring, basic details. Instead, illustrate your skills in action by sharing specific impacts you’ve made. For example, you might share that you achieved a “50% increase in math test scores” or “brought 100% of students to at or above grade level in math.”

This showcases your abilities in a way that lets the reader imagine you at their school, teaching their students.

Math teacher cover letter body

When writing the body of your cover letter, follow this specific formula:

  • Illustrate your experience and skills
  • Describe how you're a perfect fit for the culture of the school
  • Close out with a conclusion that leaves them wanting to learn more
  • Finish off with a call to action that compels the hiring manager to contact you

First body paragraph: your suitability for the role (skills & experience)

The first paragraph should detail the key experiences and talents that make you the school’s ideal math teacher. Don’t just list them, however. Spin them into an engaging story:

  1. Highlight your education. You can’t teach without first having learned, so showcase your educational credentials, whether that includes a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree (or higher), or teaching certificate.
  2. Emphasize your teaching experience. Describe your history as a math educator. For the most success, share specific achievements like bringing the student body up to grade level or skyrocketing test scores.
  3. Illustrate your work with diverse populations. Every student is unique, and many schools comprise diverse groups. Explain how you have successfully taught students of varying demographics and abilities.
  4. Detail your awareness of educational trends and tools. Show off how you stay abreast of teaching techniques, child development, computer skills, or educational technologies.
  5. Flex your math skills. Beyond just sharing your teaching experience, focus on your expertise in mathematics.
  6. Describe extracurricular work. If you’ve also led after-school clubs, coached sports, or worked on other extracurricular events, it shows you’re a well-rounded educator.

Second body paragraph(s): alignment with the institution

Once you’ve explained what makes you uniquely qualified for the role, it’s time to talk about why this school is of interest to you and how you align with their culture and mission.

Research the institution and arm yourself with an understanding of what sets them apart and how they approach educating their students. Then, show how your own values and goals align with theirs.

For example, you may read on the school’s website that they prioritize the following:

  • Innovative educational strategies that increase student engagement
  • Emphasis on STEM education
  • Fostering a diverse, inclusive educational environment

You can incorporate these goals into your cover letter, adding personal anecdotes or experiences that show your interest and alignment.

How to write a math teacher cover letter with no experience

The vast majority of math teacher jobs require teaching experience of some sort. However, if you’ve only got education and student teaching under your belt, you can still write a compelling cover letter.

Focus on these details:

  • Academic background. Your teaching degree and/or certificate hold a lot of importance, so place that front and center. If you have specific math education, mention that, too.
  • Student teaching. Include details about your student teacher experience, what you learned, and what you accomplished.
  • Transferable skills. If you haven’t held a formal educator position, describe past tutoring, mentorship, or coaching experience, whether on a paid or volunteer basis.

Including these points will help if you lack direct experience

Expert tip

Consider ATS

An applicant tracking system (ATS) is software used by companies to collect and manage job applications. Some systems offer advanced filtering, pulling to the top applications that best match the job posting.

When applying to math teacher roles, peruse the job posting to gather the most important keywords, then ensure they’re reflected on your resume and cover letter. For example:

  • “Teaching experience”
  • “Teaching degree”
  • “Mathematics education”
